Acting and paying taxes in Ontario

Posted: under Career.

So I’m looking on Casting Workbook at some of the up and coming auditions and I decided to call up a casting agent to ask to submit my resume. They said I could but also asked if I had “Paid taxes in Ontario in the past year.” Of course the answer was no. They said that would make it hard as that was who they were looking for. They also said that many actors go back and forth between cities and so this is likely. (Yeh, I’m sure there are thousands of actors that do this)

So I’m thinking of ways to pay taxes in Ontario now. Who knew that this would be a denominator that would prevent me from getting a part. I work my but off to act and perform and THIS is the common denominator. Boo.

I called up the Ontario Minsiter of Finance. They actually said that Ontario only taxes 5 services, ”

* telecommunication services (telephone, cable, pay television)
* accommodation for less than one month (hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts)
* labour provided to install, assemble, dismantle, adjust, repair or maintain tangible personal property and labour provided to install, configure, modify or upgrade a computer program
* contracts for the service, maintenance or warranty of goods, including computer programs
* commercial parking.

Notice that ACTING is NOT a taxable service. So BITE me. I’m now looking into buying land in the most remote regions of Ontario and BC so I can be taxable. How’s that for trying to focus on my career!!!
And this is work IN Canada.  Wait till I try Los Angeles.

Got some comments for me?
